James T. Kirk is assigned to the USS Enterprise after Captain Christopher Pike is left in a comatose state. He is the youngest Captain in Federation history and deals with the insecurities of the pressure. He finds solace in Dr. McCoy, who he befriends easily, but butts heads with First Officer Spock. While being acquainted with the various crew members, they are thrown into a chaotic situation being caused by the Romulans. Kirk must use his ingenuity and clever tactics to settle the chaos before it's too late.
