The Foreigner is an adaptation of the play of the same name by Larry Shue.
Charlie Baker and his best friend Sgt. Froggy LeSueur are two Brits visiting Tilghman County, Georgia. Charlie's been feeling down because his wife has been having several affairs, 23 to be exact. He's a shy man and doesn't want to speak to anyone on his vacation at the local fishing lodge. Froggy makes his wish come true by telling the owner, Betty Meeks, that Charlie is a foreigner who cannot speak English. Insanity ensues as Charlie learns many secrets he's not supposed to hear. He learns that Catherine Simms, the wealthy heir to her father's business, is pregnant by her fiancé Reverend David Marshall Lee. He learns that half of her inheritance is to go to her dim-witted brother Ellard if she finds him smart enough. And he learns that David is making Ellard seem dumber than he is so he can gain Catherine's money, so he and his racist colleague Owen Musser can perform some nefarious schemes. This farce is filled with zany antics and heartfelt emotion.
