British-born, orphaned former child genius, 18 year-old Pamela Lillian Isley is one of the jewels in SARC, the principal scientific research facility in Gotham City, particularly in the field of plant biology; hence her move to America. Over the past couple of weeks, she is excited by a breakthrough that could mean a more potent form of plant regeneration, even in soil poisoned by radiation. She has been synthesizing a liquid that has the ability to grow two trees where there was just one, which she keeps in a disused fish-tank. One night, however, the HQ of SARC is raided by men out to steal the funds. The police are called, and a shoot-out occurs. She hides under the glass container housing the solution, but it is hit by a stray bullet, and she is drenched in the liquid. Whilst in hospital, her DNA changes and she becomes half-human, half-plant. Using the initials of her first and last names, she adopts the alias ‘Poison Ivy’, as her lips are filled with a highly toxic plant extract. At first, she uses her genetic gifts for criminal purposes and for revenge. Commissioner Gordon and his men capture her, but James decides that her enhanced biological abilities can be put to good use, and he decides to mould her into someone like his masked ally, Batman.
