The epic of the Geat hero Beowulf.
The Danish kingdom ruled by King Hrothgar is terrorized by the monster Grendel for 12 years. Tales spread about the reign of terror like wildfire. Soon a group of 14 Geats (modern day Swedes) led by Beowulf go to Denmark to defeat Grendel. He mortally wounds Grendel with his bare hands during a brawl. Soon Grendel's mother retalliates against the Danes, thus leading Beowulf to kill her with a giant's sword. Years later when Beowulf is and old king ruling Geatland (again, modern day Sweden), a dragon starts attacking due to one of his prized possessions stolen. Soon the old warrior-king goes into battle against the monster. All but one of his men leave him. Wiglaf and Beowulf destroy the monster, but the dragon mortally wounds the king. The dead king is buried by the sea.
