Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1930's) by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett

English con-man Lawrence Jamieson is making a very nice living on the French Riviera, posing as Balkan Royalty deposed by brutal Fascists and taking rich, bored, socially-ambitious American matrons for the ride of their life. Things get complicated when his little patch is invaded by a brash, inexperienced American named Freddy Benson who thinks that taking a woman for 20 bucks is the height of accomplishment. Fearing that Benson maybe the un-caught con-artist known as The Jackal, Jamieson takes Benson on as his apprentice. They become competitors when a sweet, naive, and apparently very wealthy young woman named Janet Colgate arrives on the Riviera. The first to con her out of $50,000 wins. The loser must leave. Let the games begin!
