A sixteen year-old girl from Cheadle, Manchester, Bella, is reunited with her American father, Charlie Swan, when she is sent to spend a year in Forks, Washington, whilst her mother, Renee, and her stepfather, Gary Shepherd, head off on a round-the-world cruise, paid for by a portion of their lottery win. The US culture leaves her feeling isolated and friendless, even though the American teenagers who attend the local high school do display some curiosity about having a British citizen in their midst. Soon, she accepts the social exile that external circumstances seem to be imposing upon her, and finds it easy to keep a very low profile. Only two young men pay attention to her, Jacob Black, one of the local Native Americans, and Edward, the adopted son of the local doctor, Carlisle Cullen. But when a near fatal car accident occurs, Edward accidentally reveals a secret to Bella, one that could conceivably put her in the maximum amount of peril: he and the rest of his foster family are vampires!
