A young woman prowling the deserted American countryside in search of zombies in need of someone “removing the head or destroying the brain” is also looking for clues as to how it all began as well as a way to end the zombie apocalypse around her once and for all. She first goes to the Philippines and befriends a zombie there, learning from him that most, if not all, of the Philippines, has been zombified because a couple of nutjobs decided out of the blue to leak a virus known as Death One, which kills the living and reanimates the dead and which scientists were working on at the time of the break-in. The two team up to find a cure for Death One, and the woman, named Bailey, collects all remaining Death One strands from the laboratory before setting off to find a scientist able to work out a cure for the virus.
Their next stop is a helicopter crash site near Philadelphia, but not before this unlikely duo picks up a soldier named Ken (who doesn't trust zombies after having to deal with them on the Philippines and losing his buddies Bo and Roger to them) and his new girlfriend Patricia (who lost her previous boyfriend, Glenn, to the zombies on the Philippines), two survivors of the Death One outbreak on the Philippines, in the Rockies. The party manages to pick up Peter Washington, a former Philadelphia SWAT member, and Francine Parker, a former WGON news technician, before heading for New York, where they find another clue to this madness: a letter from one Dr. Bolt to his daughter Ann, from Matool Island in the Caribbean.
Upon reaching Matool, they meet Ann, who has vowed to continue her father's research after learning about a zombie outbreak in New York, and newspaper reporter Peter West, who is assisting her like the late Dr. Menard once assisted her father. But the living dead is coming for them, and time may be running out. Can Ann develop a cure for both the voodoo zombies and the Death One zombies before our intrepid heroes are eaten alive by the living dead?
Presented in 3D, filmed partially in IMAX 3D, and brings the official Italian Zombi trilogy full circle.
