The Fifth Amendment by J.D. Taylor

A straightforward civil case taking place in Sacramento, California is thrown into turmoil when the star witness, Cynthia Brown, pleads the fifth amendment. Much to the surprise of her lawyer, Stella Arnold, the judge overseeing this case refuses Miss Brown's legal right to silence over aspects of her evidence. Paying a visit to her client the following day, Stella finds the body of Cynthia lying on the kitchen floor: she has been shot through the head. When the police investigation concludes that Miss Brown committed suicide, Stella's legal instincts tell her that there is some sort of conspiracy afoot and she teams up with Cynthia's older sister, April, and James Greenhall, one of the candidates for California's new District Attorney, to uncover the real reason behind the murder of a trial's star witness, even if it puts them in the firing line.
