Taking off where Dawn and Day of the Dead succeeded the night the dead first rose, Wake of the Dead is goes back to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the dead have long ago succeeded mankind at the top of the food chain.
After the mass exodus of people trying to escape the cities in Dawn, the walking dead followed en masse into the country leaving a small bastion of mankind just enough time to plan their defence strategy.
Now years later, after coming to the bitter conclusion that mankind isn't coming back from the brink of exctinction, the same bastion has somewhat grown and divided into many, holed up inside Pennsylvania's maximum security prisons.
At Graterford State Correctional Facility, Peter Washington and his now adult godson (son of Fran, who died during child labour) plan to lead another exodus South before all the resources have been used up over the next winter.
Having communicated with people in Florida, they decide that is where they will go and when more survivors begin to flock in the same direction - one familiar face (the Skipper at the fuel dock back in Pittsburgh) being one of them - they join forces and begin their journey through a devastated land where the dead now aimlessly swarm like a force of nature.
However where there is the will to survive, there is paranoia and greed and the exodus - helped by a veteran team of Tactical Support Troops commanded by a terminally cool Sgt. Major Jimmy “Hawkeye” Reid - find themselves not only battling with the dead but with armies of savage men and the feral remains of a dead world's offspring!
