The Fog by James Herbert

What is suspected to be a minor earthquake causes a Southern English country village to fall into a fissure in the ground. Trapped, John Holman - an investigator for the Environmental Sector retreating from a stakeout at a nearby military testing site - manages to rescue two children from the fissure but when he is pulled out from the misty dar, he has gone insane.

Waking up in hospital, he finds himself back to normal but it is suggested that the freak mist that rose up from within the fissure had something to do with his brief moment of madness, which he doesn't remember.

Meanwhile in London's surrounding countryside, a fog bank is lurking, driving everyone it envelopes to insane acts of violence and murder. It becomes apparent when Holman is asked for help by the Ministry of Defence, since he has built something of an immunity to the mysterious killer fog, that this fog is the result of an extremely unstable bioengineered chemical weapon that was abandoned and buried beneath the earth.

It is up to Holman to try to help the MoD eradicate the killer fog but before long, all of London wakes up with the fog outside their doors!
