Kyukai City proudly calls itself home to Mirai Academy, but in the distant past, it was also the battleground for a war between humans and the Demon Empire. Although said Empire appeared to be winning initially, the five brave young women at the forefront of the rebellion received mystical aid from some benevolent spirits. They transformed into the warriors Pretty Cure, and beat back the invasion, sealing them in their own separate dimension.
The Empire made another effort under the guidance of their leader, Devil King Asseimera, fifteen years ago, necessitating the awakening of a new generation of Cures. Henkomera, Asseimera's son, the commander of his forces and a spy, fell for the leader of the Cures, Kimi Yoshimoto, and convinced her and her teammates to help him overthrow his corrupt and tyrannical father rather than simply seal the dimensions back, thus creating a peace between the two sides. However, it ended in tragedy, as the King's personal power source, the Rage Tree, almost killed the Cures, even forcefully divesting two of them of their powers. Henkomera sacrificed himself to save them and was forced to become the tree's new life in the process.
Asseimera vowed to take revenge; until then, the Cures entered into an arrangement with their mentor, Elder Sol: they would become threshold guardians and maintain the still-incomplete Great Seal as long as possible. Fifteen years later, hairline cracks begin to appear in the magical barriers as the Black Triumvirate, Asseimera's inner cabinet, slip in and begin sapping the sealing energy from Kyukai, even as they search for the seal guardians. It is up to a newly appointed generation of Cures, Hiroko Tsubasa, her classmates Izumi Hamasaki and Yasu Fukuda, and Elder Sol's daughter, Muse, alias Jun Inoue, to suppress these efforts and prepare a new seal before the Empire overtakes their city, and later, their world.
