It is the year 2290. A highly respected British scientist, Professor John Robinson marries American astrophysicist Maureen Leitz, leading to friction between John's nineteen year-old daughter, Judy, and Maureen's children, Penny and Will. Things come to a head when Judy's scientific talents are snapped up by a military weapons company. When NASA places Professor Robinson in charge of their colonisation and terraforming programme, his one-time friend and colleague, Dr. Zachary Smith becomes resentful and angry at being overlooked for such an important task. In charge of piloting the craft is former US Air Force pilot Major Don West. He feels this is a waste of his talents, however. Judy is chosen by NASA to help fit the spaceship with weapons, much to the disgust of John, his 2nd wife and stepchildren. Another argument ensues and Judy ends up seeking refuge in the arms of her secret lover, Dr Smith. The two conspire to humiliate her father and Maureen by sabotaging the launch of the ship, so that the company she represents can take over the mission. Unbeknownst to her, though, Smith has been recruited to a terrorist group opposed to Earth's colonisation of other planets to destroy the ship's systems. Yet, he is unaware that the program has an added instruction for the service droid to kill the crew. When he realises this, he tries to deactivate it, but it can't be countermanded. He awakes the crew and they deal with the situation, but Major West discovers his treachery, and he becomes the Robinson family's prisoner. The crew of the ship have a bigger problem - they were forced to use the light speed drive without proper co-ordinates, and they find themselves lost in the vast wilderness of space.
