In the futuristic world of Amoi, every key decision is made by a supercomputer called Jupiter. Jupiter has installed a number of strict social rules to its society. The populance is largely male (to control population growth, the number of female births are limited) and seperated in classes based on hair color - silver and/or blondes (called “Blondies”) are the most elite, ending with dark haired people (called “mongrels”) are at the bottom of society. Blondies are sterile and forbidden to have intercourse, instead keeping “pets” - young men kept for a year or two who are made for performing sexual actions for the Blondie's vouyeristic entertainment. Blondies aren't supposed to keep pets for long or interact sexually with them, but one man named Iason Mink has kept a pet named Riki (a mongrel), for years (he's 20, old for a pet) and is rumored to be sleeping with him, a direct violation of Jupiter's laws. Iason refuses to let go of Riki, even when he is the subject of mean-spirited gossip and ridicule, while Riki fights with his emotions and his society's problems, unable to decide what to do about his old friend and partner in crime Guy, and his growing feelings for Iason.
