Three years have passed since the untimely death of Rachel Dawes at the hands of The Joker. Her replacement in Gotham City's justice department is a twenty-something legal high-flyer Mary Gifford from Britain. Mary's first case is to allow Selina Kyle (nee Kerlihnn) get access to her child and to gain some financial help from her estranged husband, billionaire Peter Kyle. When she fails to get both, Selina vows revenge on Peter and on Lorraine Fenton, the judge who found in favour of her evil husband. She attacks Judge Fenton and starts to steal souvenirs from his mansion, including a cat costume, chronicling her ex-husband's twisted sexual perversions, in spite of her fear of cats; a phobia she soon overcomes. Meanwhile, shrouded in secrecy, because Gotham City's police department still regards The Dark Knight as a vigilante, Commissioner Gordon and Batman join forces to stop a flood of dangerous medication, manufactured by corrupt scientist Professor Milo, entering the country, and Peter Kyle's name comes up in connection with the investigation. Getting a taste for crime, Selina uses her gymnastic skills to commit a series of robberies at jewel stores to gain the funds denied to her by the courts. Learning of Peter's involvement in the smuggling operation of illegal drugs, Selina blackmails him into paying her twenty million dollars for her silence. He tries to kill her, but she is too quick and Peter meets his maker instead. His silent partner, new crime boss Michael Sorino, pays his top hitman a cool two million dollars, but Bruce rescues Selina. They start dating, but an informant tells Gordon and Batman of Ms Kyle's involvement in the operation to import dangerous medicine into Gotham. She is arrested, but Gordon doesn't have enough firm evidence to charge her, so she walks free. Believing Sorino was the one who turned her in, she pays one of his hitmen, using her late husband's cheque book, to kill Sorino. Creating the criminal alter ego, The Catwoman, Selina takes control of Sorino's top men, and begins a one-woman crimewave, making her and Bruce/Batman enemies as well as lovers.
