Young African-American housewife and lawyer Angelique Bernstein is a sheltered yet sociable woman who throughout most of her life has dreamt about becoming a writer, she spends her free time writing numerous attempts at short stories and novels of sorts though she's held back by a persistent writer's block, a lack of confidence and even she admits that she's a bit of a mediocre writer though she's trying to improve her skills. She specialises in writing interracial romance stories, more specifically BWWM stories (Black woman, white man) originating from an old high school crush that she never forgot about. Eventually, at her job, she takes on the case of defending her white next-door neighbour and grad student Scott Webb who has a long and complicated history of having a bad conscience and suffering the consequences from it. After a tough trial in court, Angelique is able to keep Scott out of prison but he is placed under two years house arrest. Angelique becomes interested in Scott, so she starts paying him frequent visits and the two quickly form a strong friendship as she studies everything about him and starts to use their relationship as material for her stories, but what begins as just a platonic bond then grows into a strong yet difficult and troubling infatuation as both Angelique and Scott actually begin to fall deeply in love with each other, despite Angelique being happily married and devoted to her young daughter.
