David Ottman is a young down in his luck and socially awkward American factory worker who is burned out by constantly failing important friendships and relationships with anyone he meets and he's always the one taking the blame and he's practically hated by almost everyone. Mackenzie Roper is a bright, bubbly, beautiful and yet ballsy Australian woman who moved to America in pursuit of becoming a successful journalist but also to try and escape a painful and traumatic past that she fears will never leave her and will always find ways to catch up to her in the worst possibilities. Eventually, David and Mackenzie cross paths one day in January and immediately develop a strong connection and attraction towards each other and they proceed to spend what they perceive as the greatest day that they've had in their whole lives together. But their newfound relationship proves to be a lot more complicated they had anticipated because, for whatever reason, David and Mackenzie can only seem to find each other and be together for one day a year, which is coincidently and ironically the day considered to be the most depressing day of the year, Blue Monday. Meaning the two would have to go through each whole year of misery, depression, bad luck and the harsh trials of life before they are somehow able to have their one day of happiness and love together, despite that they are desperately trying their damndest to overcome their personal demons, find any way to be together outside of Blue Monday and to make the absolute most out of their one days together.
MPAA Rating: Rated R for sexual content, language and brief violence.
(Side notes: This movie takes place over the course of five years, and yes, David and Mackenzie do eventually manage to finally be together permanently in the end. This movie is essentially asking the question of if your whole life was just misery and depression, what effect would something like Blue Monday, claimed to be the most depressing day of the year have on you.)
