At the turn of the 19th century, Oliver, a young Texan boy, and a mysterious Drifter bond after the latter arrives in town on the verge of death from a dire gunshot wound to the shoulder. Oliver, an only child who struggles with the workload at his family's home, learns valuable skills from The Drifter, who helps around the ranch in exchange for food and shelter. Conversely, Oliver attempts to help The Drifter as he begins to harbor feelings for Lillian, the nurse he visits for his wound. All the while, the drifter's mysterious past becomes more and more apparent, as Robert Harwell, a ruthless bounty hunter with his own ties to the drifter, and his team search for him.
*The Drifter - mid-30s, an unnamed drifter whose past is shrouded in mystery. He shows signs of being an expert gunslinger, but now lives a more pacifistic lifestyle. He takes up shelter with the Amos family, and befriends young Oliver.
*Oliver Amos - mid-teens, the single son of the Amos family who befriends The Drifter when he arrives in town and tries to help him with his feelings towards Lillian.
*Lillian Sutherland - mid-20s, a young nurse working in town who tends to The Drifter's gunshot wound when he arrives in town.
*Robert Harwell - mid-30s, a ruthless bounty hunter in pursuit of The Drifter with a team of other bounty hunters with him. His hunt for The Drifter stems back to a deeply personal relationship between the two of them.
*Charles & Margaret Amos - Oliver's parents. They allow The Drifter to stay on their property and offer him food in exchange for him doing work around the ranch.
