My re-interpretation of Flash Gordon as a mini-series on Netflix.
Flash Gordon is a charismatic adrenaline junkie from a fraternity who is kicked out of college after several disturbances in his New York City home, and is called in by his best friend and love interest Dale Arden to analyze a top-secret experiment by Dr. Hans Zarkov. The experiment turns out to be using a spaceship to travel at hyper speed from one planet to another in a duration of days. However, Flash shows no interest in the project, having failed to achieve his degree in science and is coerced by Hans to contribute to the cause.
He reluctantly agrees to take on the trip with the two scientists. But the trip goes awry when the spaceship is hit by a meteor, setting the hyper speed controls to malfunction until it crash lands on Mongo, a Mars-like planet. The three are alive and captured by General Klytus, a hypnotist and leader of the military who is ruled under merciless Emperor Ming.
Dale and Zarkov are taken away from Flash while he is imprisoned and forced to survive on the new planet while meeting new foes and allies that will lead him to his plan of rescuing his love interest and the doctor who may be his only hope out of escaping the planet Mongo and back to Earth while stopping Emperor Ming and his men.
Note: I would stay true to the comic strips and the movie starring Sam J. Jones, but I wouldn't make it unintentionally funny. I would love to add some lighthearted comedy elements to the series, but I would make it dark and adventurous, similar to movies like Green Lantern and Doctor Strange without copying all the elements from either of those movies. Most of the series will be focused on character development (i.e., Flash's transition from cocky and all brawn jock to a fearless superhero, Emperor Ming's rise to power and curiosity of the three humans) and will have some action without getting carried away by both the drama and the development.
