In this direct adaptation of the book, chaos theorist and mathematician Ian Malcolm teams up with paleontologist Richard Levine six years after the disaster at Jurassic Park to search for a “lost world” of dinosaurs following rumors of strange animal corpses washing up on the shores of Costa Rica. They eventually learn of Site B on Isla Sorna, the “production facility” where the now-defunct company InGen hatched and grew the dinosaurs for their dinosaur theme park on nearby Isla Nublar.
Afraid that the Costa Rican government will find Isla Sorna and destroy the dinosaurs, Levine hastily embarks on an expedition to the island without Malcolm, who eventually learns that Levine has gone missing there. Malcolm goes to the island with a rescue team consisting of Jack “Doc” Thorne, an engineer and retired university professor; Eddie Carr, Thorne's assistant; Dr. Sarah Harding, an animal behaviorist and former lover of Malcolm; and two stowaways, R.B. “Arby” Benton and Kelly Curtis, who were working as Levine's research assistants.
Simultaneously, another group — geneticists Lewis Dodgson, Howard King and “celebrity” biologist, George Baselton — learns of Levine's expedition and go to Isla Sorna with plans to steal dinosaur eggs for Biosyn, the rival company of InGen.
Other characters include:
Dr. Marty Gutierrez - an American biologist who lives in Costa Rica. He finds and shows Richard Levine a dried up corpse of an unknown creature, oddly similar to the ones found prior to the Jurassic Park incident. He informs Levine that no one knows where these creatures are coming from.
Ed James - a private investigator hired by Dodgson shortly after the events of the first film to get information about the survivors of the Isla Nublar incident. After following Richard Levine around for a while, James learns the location of Isla Sorna, which he then reports to Dodgson. He does not accompany either team to Isla Sorna.
Diego - Levine's guide on Isla Sorna. He is a young, enthusiastic Costa Rican who went to the island several times as a boy and knows the land better than anyone else. He does not believe there are dinosaurs there and, even when Levine warns him to be quiet, he simply says that they have nothing to fear. He seems to annoy Levine many times – not only through his insistence that only birds live on the island, but also through disobeying his orders to refrain from using items like cigarettes while on Isla Sorna.
