A Biopic about Gene Wilder. Gene was born Jerome Silberman. The movie begins as Gene becomes interested in acting at the age of 8, because his mother was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and the doctor told him to “try and make her laugh.” At the age of 13 he began studying acting with a teacher. His mother believed he had potential, so she sent him to Black-Foxe, a military institute in Hollywood, where he was bullied and sexually assaulted, primarily because he was the only Jewish boy in the school. After his short stay at Black-Foxe, he studied Communication and Theater Arts at the University of Iowa. The movie then jumps to Gene auditioning for the Willy Wonka character in Mel Stuart's film adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 1971. The movie continues as the Willy Wonka movie is produced, and Wilder goes on to perform in other projects such as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. The movie ends with Gene attending his last successful movie's red carpet ceremony, See No Evil, Hear No Evil with Richard Pryor.
