A for Andromeda by Fred Hoyle & John Elliot - New Characters, Plot Variations & Character Alterations By J.D. Taylor

Whilst monitoring data from the ISS' on-board computer, Dr John Fearn - a former child genius in the field of astrophysics - and his colleague and girlfriend, Christine ‘Chrissy’ Johnson, who has similar qualifications in this area of science, pick up a strange signal from the Andromeda galaxy. They contact their superiors - Professor Ernest Reinhart and Dr Dennis Bridger, who in turn inform the British government. Deciphering the first transmission as technical schematics, Fearn and March build a super computer using them. A second transmission allows them to modify the machine to include a system that can create and grow a living being. Reinhart brings American bio-geneticist Professor Madeleine Dawnay on board. When Christine sees what the computer is creating, she tries to deactivate the programme. The machine then does something unexpected - it transfers the energy keeping the creature inside alive to Christine. As a result her DNA is rewritten from human to alien. Reinhart re-christens her after the galaxy that helped bring her to life. Bridger betrays his partner by turning her over to Roy Kaufman, the founder of an internet and communications company called Intel-Gen. As Christine's cells become totally extra-terrestrial, she develops new abilities such as hyper-intelligence, phenomenal strength and inhuman desires. Unable to see the danger in the escalation of her transmutation, Kaufman pays the price for his money-driven curiosity when he and his staff are killed by her. Now considered by to be a potential alien threat, the Government and MI6 sanction her to be killed. Dr Fearn and Professor Dawnay go on the run with ‘Andromeda’, pursued by a female British agent, Judy Adamson…
