Jumping through the portal created by ‘Dust’, Lyra and Pantalaimon find themselves in the parallel version of Earth that humans accept as reality. There, she comes into contact with Will Parry, a 17 year-old young man, who is staying in a halfway house, until he legally becomes an adult. He tells her that he has decided to find his dad, who vanished when he was a toddler. Lyra - who, unbeknownst to Will, has fallen in love with him - agrees to help in this quest. Puzzled by the presence of an animal that can change into any species, Lyra explains all about Daemons and the parallel world she inhabits. Their journey takes them to this version of Oxford. Inside the building, Will finds a dagger with a golden handle. He and Lyra discover it can slice a hole in the fabric of reality, taking them from one parallel universe to another. Accompanying them is Mary Malone, a physicist who was keeping the knife on his father's instructions. During this universe-hopping excursion, Marisa and two of her men catch up with them and kidnap Lyra, taking her back to her own parallel world…
