It is the year 3107 AD. When contact is lost with the USS Cygnus, a vast spaceship searching for extra-terrestrial life, NASA sends one of their recovery vessels, the USS Palomino, to investigate. They track it to its last destination, a planetary system. Less than ten minutes later, it has gone, but the Cygnus is still on the scanners. The Palomino's computers register a black hole, three million miles away. The ship touches down onto one of the landing bays, and the crew are invited aboard by the commander of the spacecraft, Dr Hans Reinhardt. He appears welcoming, but the years in space have driven him insane - a fact illustrated by the new scientific goal he has set for himself: taking the Cygnus into the black hole itself…
