The arrival of 1977 has given Meredith Keane a second reason to celebrate. She has recent graduated from the FBI's training academy and become a fully-fledged agent. Three years later, she is assigned by her superiors to pose as an IRA operative, delivering money to a man the MI6 suspect is a terrorist - Adrian Dumerty - to gather intelligence on his IRA associates and planned operations, so they can pass it onto the British security services. She objects to the mission, but she is informed that she has been selected because of her parents' connection to Belfast. Meredith travels to Dundonald, a suburb of the besieged city, and makes contact with Dumerty, under the guise of Charlotte Hunting, an angry young woman who wants to join the struggle. To maintain her cover, she sets about forming a romantic attachment with him. The plan backfires when she really does fall for him. When he is killed by people she thinks are part of a separate terrorist group, she opens fire on them, shooting one of them dead in the process. But it turns out that they were MI5 agents, disguised as paramilitaries. Grief at Adrian's assassination makes her susceptible to becoming a willing participant in terrorist activities and she takes over the IRA cell Dumerty was in charge of. Renouncing her birth name, she re-Christens herself Charlotte Hunting, vowing to fight the war against British-led rule in Northern Ireland. Her best friend at the FBI academy, Samantha Canning, learns this and is forced into being the one to stop her, by any means necessary!
