After watching the film and reading the original novel, I've come with a conglomeration of the two.
Due to overpopulation, wars and failed political and financial policies put into effect by old and out-of-touch politicians, government is overthrown by more passionate younger rebels. Influenced by a plethora of different conflicting philosophies, the new rulers decide that life should end at 30, ensuring an always young society at the pique of physical and mental ability. What results is a hedonistic paradise ruled by young and unstable teenagers and young adults.
The plot would basically the same as the film, but with a few changes more inspired by the original book. For starters, life ends at 21 instead of 30. While both the film and the book had a character named “BOX”, I feel that his inclusion in the film would be cheesy and inappropriate, as iconic and cherished the original film is.
The city would, of course, not be a shopping mall in disguise, but rather a city of massive proportions. Much like “Mega-City-1” from the “Judge Dredd” comics and recent film, the city is like a country onto itself, with the rest of the continent reclaimed by nature. Also like “Dredd”, the Sandmen should carry their original guns from the book, a weapon, with several different kinds of ammo, that would explode if anyone but the gun's original owner tried using it.
I feel that it would also be more interesting if the Old Man, the one played by Peter Ustinov in the film, or the character “Ballard” in the book, would be a middle aged man as opposed to an elderly man. Also, for the sake of separating this version from the original film, Logan should be named “Logan 3”, like in the novel.
To explain and justify these changes to the film, I bring up the point that it would be very interesting to have a film starring teenagers and young adults, but made for a mature adult audience. So, not Harry Potter-esque, but rather something that would create a very disturbing feel akin to “Lord of the Flies” or Larry Clark and Harmony Korine's 1995 film, “Kids”.
