The widely acclaimed novel tells the story of 16-year-old Holden Caulfield. After his expulsion from prep school, disillusioned Holden spends two days in New York disgusted by the phoniness of the adult world and ultimately succumbs to a mental breakdown. Upon recovering from the breakdown, Holden recounts his story to the reader.
I can see Kieran Culkin [imdb.com] as Holden, but it seems almost too similar to his role in Igby Goes Down [imdb.com].
We had to read this in high school… I remember very little.
There's a pretty decent summary as well as character descriptions and chapter by chapter analysis on the Spark Notes [sparknotes.com] site.
Thanks!

I've never seen Kieran Culkin in anything. Is at all like his more famous brother, Macauly?

I'd say Kieran is Alec Baldwin, as Macauley is to Billy Baldwin (or perhaps Steven Baldwin)
see Igby Goes Down [imdb.com] now
I'm confused. Is this seriously being considered for an actual movie, or is it just an idea a movie fan thought of?
If it really is being made into a movie, I will go on a murderous rampage. One main point of Holden's is how he hates movies and how fake and superficial they are. Or to use his vocabulary, phony. I personally disagree with him, but that's not the issue. My point is that if The Catcher in the Rye is made into a movie, it would destroy the essence of the story. The only comforting thought I have is that even though Salinger is dead, I highly doubt his family would sell the rights to anyone wishing to turn it into a movie.
If it is not being made into a movie, please carry on suggesting cast members. Debate, vote, and be merry.
Um first off, Salinger isn't dead [deadoraliveinfo.com]. I don't believe it is actually being developed though I'm sure there are many in Hollywood who would love to get their grubby little hands on the rights.

Oops. Sorry about that one. I feel like a total idiot now.

Even so, your point is not totally lost. Consider this; perhaps Holden would appreciate the irony of the story being made into a movie…then again if Salinger options the story, I believe that portion of your argument is shot.
So THAT'S the reason why a movie hasn't been made of this already, is it really because Salinger refuses to sell the movie rights to anybody? After reading the book, I for one think this could make a hell of a film provided somebody like Scorsese directed it. But if anybody else helmed it would be a complete disaster.
Scorsese would have to be very careful not to turn it into Taxi Driver 2.
I agree it shouldn't be made into a movie to keep it honest. Still I wish it could be because if it was it could be great. Also why has no one thought of Gregory Smith. Also why is Heath Ledger thought to be good for Allie? Allie was a LITTLE KID when he died!!!!
What if the Coen Brothers directed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?
What if Christopher Nolan directed The Hangover?
What if Wes Anderson directed The Hangover?
What if The Hangover was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson?
(If Days Of Thunder was made 30 years later.) Cole Trickle enters the high-pressure world …
