Who can fill Gene Wilder's shoes and lead Charlie, Veruca, Augustus, Violet, and Mike Teevee on a magical tour through the chocolate factory? Will the movie gloss over the Oompa Loompa slavery issues as the 1971 version did? Is a remake even a good idea?
Isn't Johnny Depp already cast as Willy Wonka? I hopes he doesn't act it like Pirates of the Caribbean [imdb.com]..
According to the IMdB [imdb.com], he has. And what you don't think acting Willy wonka as an odd combination of drunk and effeminate works?
Depp's comic performance in PoTC created something worth watching in what otherwise would have been two hours of video oatmeal. And you make it sound like drunk and effeminate is a bad combination…or something we haven't seen from Gene Wilder?
Would he have to wear as much eye makeup?
That depends entirely on whether CoverGirl ponies up for a significant product placement.

Really shouldn't WIlly Wonka be more in the throws of an acid trip than drunk?
so Johnny Depp ala Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [imdb.com]?

Isn't it throes?
And I like Depp, but more so for his roles as characters in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape [us.imdb.com]“ and ”Chocolat [us.imdb.com]".
He is amusing, but not genuinely funny in roles like the one in PotC.
I think a nice touch would be to attempt to cast Gene Wilder as Grandpa Joe. I know that Gene Wilder rarely acts anymore, and I don't know if he would agree to do it, but I think that would be just smashing – and I am dying for Gene Wilder to make his cinematic comedback.
I'm personally delighted that Johnny Depp has been cast as Willy Wonka. I've loved his previous collaborations with Tim Burton – they're *both* at their best when working together. Think how hilariously inventive he was with his roles in “Sleepy Hollow” and “Ed Wood” not to mention the masterpiece of “Edwards Scissorhands.”
I'm sure we can expect that this will be a more sinister and imaginative incarnation of the tale than the campier 70s version and I'm so glad. Enough with the orange-faced Oompa Loompas in white overalls, you know?
By the way, casting Gene Wilder as Grampa Joe is a great idea. I wish they'd gone with it…
I think it will be good to see some unknowns in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, particularly the children. I get tired of seeing the same child stars over and over. I think Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka will bring the film some star power, but not an overdose. Depp should make the movie new and engaging, different than the original.
I'm not sure If I am out of line, but I was directed to your wonderful site here through IMDB.com because of this movie. I submitted a link for “The Rum Diary”*supposed to star Johnny Depp* because casting of this movie has been quite an issue, and if this was linked directly to IMDB, you would get alot of respondants
*sorry, nothing to bribe with*
Taking Gene Wilder out of mothballs would really do nothing for the film except satisfy some old-school Wilder fans. let it go. I'd rather see Wilford Brimley [imdb.com] as grandpa, at least he'd be believable.
Johnny Depp is the last Great method actor. he IS gonna be Willy Wonka and he is gonna BE Willy Wonka.
And lay of POTC already that was the best Disney movie ever made.
(in my humble opinion)

I have to agree with you…but saying I like a Disney movie makes me feel kinda icky

What if the Coen Brothers directed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?
What if Christopher Nolan directed The Hangover?
What if Wes Anderson directed The Hangover?
What if The Hangover was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson?
