Genly Ai is an emissary from the human galaxy to Winter, a lost, stray world. His mission is to bring the planet back into the fold of an evolving galactic civilization, but to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own culture and prejudices and those that he encounters. On a planet where people are of no gender--or both--this is a broad gulf indeed. He befriends Estraven, a traitor in Winter, and goes on the run with him, across miles and miles of ice.
What if "Jack Kirby's Fourth World: The Movie" were produced?
The movie presents a future in which the Earth has achieved a vast starfaring civilization, but is slowly and steadily succumbing to ennui or despair, often due to defeat and subjugation by a foreign invader. Rising against the general apathy, Harlock denies defeat and leads an outlaw crew aboard his starship Arcadia to undertake daring raids against Earth's oppressors.

In the "Unstoppable" arc, Joss Whedon wrote an adventure taking place on the alien Breakworld. The X-Men square off against the Breakworld leaders, who are intending to destroy Earth by firing a giant bullet. The Danger subplot is also resolved, and Whedon established that Danger is hard-coded not to kill. In the end, Shadowcat phases inside the Breakworld bullet, and when it reaches Earth, makes it intangible, so that the bullet passes through Earth. Shadowcat seemingly sacrifices her life, comic book death-style. ( See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astonishing_X-Men#.22Unstoppable.22_.28Issues_19-24.2C_Giant-Size_Astonishing_X-Men_.231.29 )
