All starts well for the three wealthy Baudelaire children at the beginning of this sad series, but their lives take a sudden unfortunate turn when their parents are killed in a fire. The trio are transported to an unusal set of foster homes, with many encounters with their evil uncle Count Olaf, who is after the childrens inheritance.
Two boys runaway from home to Venice after they are sent to live with their evil aunt and uncle as a result of their mother's death. The boys join a group of kids that have to steal to survive. The aunt and uncle come to Venice searching for the boys. They dispatch the help of detective Victor Getz in finding the boys. The group of kids are led by Scipio, the Thief Lord, who is very secretive and mysterious. What could he be hiding?
