Throughout the film, the film also tells the story of Bechdel's father Bruce and her mother. Both Alison and her father struggle to come to terms with the fact that they are both gay.

Cloak and Dagger by Bill Mantlo and Edward Hannigan

Two teenage runaways, Tyrone "Ty" Johnson and Tandy Bowen, are kidnapped and forced to take experimental drugs. The only survivors, Ty and Tandy develop superpowers as a result: He can engulf people in darkness, she can emit daggers of light. They become vigilantes known as Cloak and Dagger, and begin taking down drug dealers and helping runaway children.

Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles by Hanna-Barbera

Taking place in Civic City, boy scientist Buzz Conroy and his father Professor Conroy fight supervillains with the aid of a powerful heroic robot named Frankenstein Jr. They team up with a trio of superheroes (Multi Man, Fluid Man, and Coil Man) who pose undercover as a Beatlesesque rock music band. The characters' names are descriptive of their powers: Multi-Man can create identical copies of himself; Coil-Man can form into a super-springy coil; and Fluid-Man can transform his body into any fluid. The heroes go by the name "The Impossibles".
