2 years after the civil war in Southern California ended with the oppressed ruling, Roman leaves like a ghost and goes north. When he gets there he finds out that the area is ran by lunatic factions. Later he finds out that whatever gangs are in charge use railroads and have those they despise to work in the mines. Sully Wilkenson, a Navy Seal, coming back from war takes a train to Washington state to find his childhood friend who ran off when they were in middle school. When he gets to the house he finds out that his friend is missing and left him with a note, large sum of cash, weapons, and his son. The authorities start monitoring Sully's activities and start questioning him when people start disappearing. Sully soon finds a conspiracy happening and is one of the few people that can stop it.
A somewhat daffy book editor on a rail trip from Los Angeles to Chicago thinks that he sees a murdered man thrown from the train. When he can find no one who will believe him, he starts doing some investigating of his own. But all that accomplishes is to get the killer after him.
