A camping trip with one of Julian's teachers turns up rumours about a haunted train being heard by the inhabitants of the nearest town. When illness forces Quentin and Fanny to vacate the cottage temporarily, an obnoxious housekeeper, Mrs Stick, and her equally hideous family move in. Strange boat trips to Kirrin Island coincide with the abduction of the daughter of a tycoon. Following their instincts, the Famous Five discover that the little girl isn't the only one being held for ransom.
A new face turns up at Kirrin Cottage, Mr Roland - a man charged with the task of teaching the two young men and two young women. Only when several imporant documents go missing from Quentin's study do the Famous Five become suspicious of their tutor. Their investigation leads them to a hidden series of secret passages beneath the cottage, and to a plot to smuggle confidential documents to the Nazis.
