One of Cambridge University's most brilliant and respected scientists, Professor Adam Coulter, is growing nearer to creating a serum that can activate the body's ability to regenerate damaged limbs at their cellular level. To ensure the success of this project, he plans to expose himself to Gamma radiation, in order to see whether the serum can protect him from the sun's energy, but he is hospitalised after a car accident, and his lab assistant, Jennifer Walters, who is studying biology and law, takes his place. Whilst out on a picnic, Tommy and 'Tuppence' come across a kitchen knife with fresh blood stains on it. Fearing that a murder might have taken place, they take it to the nearest police station. Whilst there, the owner - a middle-aged single mother of two daughters - comes to claim it. Her explanation that she accidentally cut herself and then threw it away doesn't tie in with where the potential weapon was found. The next day, her two teenage girls find their mother with the washing line around her neck, and the kitchen knife is missing. The Beresfords put ...
Thanks to Thomas's parents volunteering to take care of their four-month old grandaughter, Vanessa, Tommy accompanies Tuppence to a reunion of former pupils at Hurstworth, her old boarding school. One of the current students, a sixteen year-old girl named Georgina Clarke keeps talking about a murder that took place there, three years ago, but the headmistress, Lenora Sampson declares that it was suicide. However, when Georgina is pushed to her death from the top floor, the Beresfords find that they have to re-open the forgotten murder enquiry, and in doing so, re-open old wounds.
A strange text message on Tuppence's mobile, featuring the cryptic question "N or M?", leads her and Tommy into the suspicious death of a waitress in a cafe on Brighton's promenade. Digging deeper, they discover a link with a murder case that Manchester CID failed to solve over twenty years ago. During the unofficial enquiry, Tuppence discovers she is pregnant.
Whilst on their honeymoon in Dorset, the Beresfords become involved in the murder of the cousin of Lord Robert Gossington - the owner of Sunningdale House, a country estate. The police suspect Lord Gossington's solicitor, Mark Pickford, but Tommy and Tuppence think that vital evidence is being overlooked, and choose to make their own investigation into the murder and find themselves up against a wall of seemingly unbreakable alibis.
