In an alternative Earth in 1939, a deadly alien force known as Neuroi attack nation after nation, destroying military forces. In desperation, several countries band together to create Strike Witches: field aerial combat units of young girls capable of using magic. They soon become the best defence against the invaders. In 1944, Yoshika Miyafuji is approached by ace witch Mio Sakamoto to join the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. She then must learn what it takes to be a Strike Witch while she struggles to bond with her fellow comrades and take down an enemy she doesn't understand, and doesn't hate.
Simon lives in a cavern village where he drills holes to expand his stifling little world. Then he finds a small glowing drill-bit and the man-sized mecha it activates. Before he can react, Simon is dragged into a plot to break through to the surface by Kamina, a local gang leader. Kamina and the cowardly Simon soon find themselves defending their village, but what awaits the duo when they reach the surface?
