In 1922, the husband of Edith Thompson, Percy, is stabbed by Frederick Bywaters, a young merchant sailor with whom she has been conducting an extra-marital affair. Soon after, letters she wrote to him are found and the press coverage becomes a witch-hunt against her. Few, other than her family and Bywaters himself, believe she is innocent of murder, and moral outrage becomes the catalyst leading to her destruction.
