A camping trip with one of Julian's teachers turns up rumours about a haunted train being heard by the inhabitants of the nearest town. Three fifteen year-old evacuees - Julian, Dick and Anne - meet up in one of the carraiges of the train heading to the countryside, and become friends by sharing stories of the German air attacks on the cities.
