In the city of Isola, the detectives of the 87th Precinct have their share of murder and other crimes to solve. Fortunately they are good at their jobs (at least most of them). There's introspective Steve Carella; ladies' man Cotton Hawes; genial Bert Kling and sarcastic Meyer Meyer; tough little Hal Willis and big, beefy Artie Brown; lazy Andy Parker, and dumb Richie Genero, who accidentally becomes a hero one night. Lt. Byrnes is the squad commander and Dave Murchison is the desk sergeant. Fat Ollie Weeks of the 88th precinct, the "equal opportunity bigot" (he hates everyone), sometimes helps with their cases. Always around but little help are the homicide detectives from downtown, Monoghan and Monroe. And let's not leave out the ladies--Eileen Burke, the only woman in the 87th, her friend Annie Rawles of the Rape Squad, Off. Patricia Gomez of the 88th, Fat Ollie's eventual love interest, and Carella's deaf wife Teddy. And of course, the 87th's most persistent adversary is the notorious Deaf Man.
