Three NY University freshmen - Reed Richards, science major, two sport students, Sue Storm, her twin brother Johnny - and Colonel Ben Grimm, a veteran NASA astronaut, are given the honour of flying into space to observe cosmic radiation from the confines of a space station owned by billionaire and genius Victor Von Doom, who is accompanying the students as part of a publicity exercise. However, the cloud of radioactive insterstellar material suddenly expands, engulfing the entire space station, including its temporary occupants. Back on Earth, the five of them discover that the radiation has re-written their DNA, giving them unusual gifts. However, whilst the three freshmen and the TA use their extraordinary abilities for the good of mankind, Victor has other ideas on how to use his new-found powers....
