Ex-reporter turned PI Tess Monaghan hasn't had many cases yet, but suddenly she's got two at once. When local business baron "Wink" Wynkowski announces a plan to bring NBA basketball back to Baltimore, the Baltimore Beacon-Light, Tess's former employer, runs a damaging story on the tycoon. As the paper's editors are sure they killed the story, they hire Tess to determine who got it into the paper. The plot thickens when Wynkowski is found dead in his garage, his car's engine running.
Meanwhile, Tess's uncle Spike is in the hospital, courtesy of some local goons who want something from him--something they think Tess is in possession of. Tess will have to solve both mysteries to stay alive.
