Tom Shepard had been the youngest detective with the Los Angeles PD, a rising star. But after a controversial shooting incident, he returned to his birthplace of Laguna Beach, a peaceful town with an average of one homicide every two years. But he had hardly settled into his job before a long-time resident is found murdered. Even as Tom investigates, a second murder occurs, and a clear connection between them is found. As Tom plunges into the murky case, he finds a web of connections running back 40 years and involving many of the town's leading citizens, members of an exclusive local club--and also involving his father Wade, a cop turned minister. At the same time, Tom tries to deal with the romantic sparks that arise every time he meets with Jane Algernon, the daughter of one of the victims.
