On the techno-medieval world of Avalon, Ethan, youngest prince of the Heron Dynasty, celebrates his 21st birthday by engaging in an annual sword-fighting tournament against Bron, prince of the Raven Dynasty, mortal enemies of the Herons. Before Ethan faces Bron, he is touched by a mysterious stranger who brands Ethan with a strange sigil. In the midst of the duel, the sigil activates and Ethan ends up wounding Bron with his sword, giving him a permanent scar. To prevent war between the two kingdoms, Ethan agrees to be the Ravens' prisoner for a year, but he is later freed by Ashleigh, who later turns out to be Bron's sister and leader of an underground group fighting for the rights of the Lesser Races.
