Jeffrey Deaver reinvents Ian Fleming's 007 for a new era in "Carte Blanche." After running several covert ops during the Afghan War, James Bond has no desire to take on a mundane job. After a stint in Defense Intelligence, Bond is recruited by M into a new organization called the ODG. Acting seperately from MI5, MI6, and the Ministry of Defense, ODG's elite double oh agents are given "carte blanche" to protect the realm, by any means necessary.
Now, 007 finds himself investigating the mysterious Incident 20. He has less than a week to observe Rag-and-Bones-Man Severan Hydt, an eccentric mogul with a fetish for death and decay, and his right-hand man, Irish troubleshoot Niall Dunne. His assignment will take him from Serbia to London, Dubai, and South Africa. If he fails, thousands will be killed, and British interests will be adversely affected.
