The life and times of James Avery Varney, Jr. With an interest in theater stemming from childhood, Jim would entertain audiences in nightclubs, coffee houses, and onstage. But it wasn't until his string of commercials would he first gain fame with his trademark character, Ernest P. Worrell. He would then go on to star in the Emmy Award-winning TV show "Hey Vern, It's Ernest" and several feature films until his death from lung cancer in 2000.
