Supergirl by Otto Binder & Al Plastino - New Characters By J.D. Taylor

A British sixteen year-old girl, Clara Mayfield, is looking forward to a trip abroad to Germany. Suddenly, an outbreak of flu necessetates the need for every pupil to have a blood test, but when the school nurse tries in vain to get a sample of blood, as every syringe needle used breaks, she starts to suspect that she is far from normal. Then, other things start to happen: she begins seeing through solid objects; she flips a car over onto its roof in a fit of anger, as easily as turning over a magazine; her running speed increases to over a hundred miles an hour. All these things convince her that she is a freak. However, the truth comes out that Clara is not their biological child, and that they found her wandering around a crater, in which was some kind of meteorite, when she was a toddler. Emotionally bruised by this revelation, she runs away and tries to commit suicide by jumping off a motorway bridge. It is there that she discovers the clearest clue about her actual heritage - she can fly. Finding the meteorite, she finally learns that she is Kara, the cousin of Superman. This fact changes her life, and she creates a secondary persona, which she christens Supergirl.
