Mighty Max by Christy Marx and Gordon Bressack

Max is an average boy who finds out he is destined to be the prophesied "Mighty One" who will stop the Skullmaster from destroying the world. He is aproached by Virgil, an owl-like creature, who is an ancient mage. Virgil bestows unto Max a talisman that will allow Max to transport between time, dimension, and space. Upon telling Max of his desitny he introduces Max to protector, an immortal warrior named Norman, although he has gone by many other names of ancient lore such as Hercules. Max decides to fight against the Skullmaster and proves to be a natural at fighting his way out of a problem, however he doesn't really believe he is the chosen one. Only time will prove him wrong
