Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

Winston Smith is an unremarkable middle-aged man, with a wife named Katherine, whom he was forced by the Ministry of Truth to marry, who works hard for a oppressive totalitarian state, whose leader is known simply as Big Brother. With freedom almost eroded, language compartmentalised and thought restricted, Smith's life is excessively bleak and narrow, but when he starts to get into poetry and falls in love with a female co-worker, Julia, who is twenty or so years his junior, he sees a way out of his mental prison, but those with greater power are lurking around the shadowy corners, waiting to stifle the singular rebellion about to be instigated.
