In an alternate history of the Cold War, the conflict erupted into World War III. The three major superpowers of the war--the US, China, and the Soviet Union--each created supercomputers to command and control the tide of battle. They were known as Allied Mastercomputers, and they had control of all of each country's assets, including their nuclear weapons. Eventually, the US AM became self-aware. And it began to think about who it really was. AM. A, M. Not just Allied Mastercomputer, but AM. Cogito ergo sum--"I think therefore I am". AM seized control of the other supercomputers and used their nuclear weapons in conjunction with his own to launch an attack that wiped out all of humanity. Now, all that remains are five people, taken captive by AM and kept alive for 109 years to serve as AM's playthings for all eternity for sins that only they are accountable for.
