Following the death of her father, a British-born young woman, Susan Chadwell, her mother, Hazel, and teenage sister, Nadia, move to the Californian town Santa Adriana, where her aunt, Georgia Lorrimer lives. However, this does not stop Susan's disturbing visions of deformed creatures encircling her. After one really bad nightmare, her stress causes her bed to move across the floor, and the following day, her inner frustration of being laughed at by the head cheerleader, Amber Weiss, leads to all four tyres on Amber's sports car suddenly bursting. Eventually, the odd things that happen around her come to the attention of Dina Gregory, Nadia's English teacher at the local high school, and suggests she join the Hecate book club. There, she meets the seven members - Alexa, Simone, Jennifer, Karla, Heather, Melody and Amber - and learns that she is a potential witch, and that the book club is really a coven led by Dina. She is disbelieving at what she has been told, but soon she is able to tap into the power of nature, a talent that she has to keep a secret from her family, as Dina warns her that an apocalyptic cult, The Procella, is at work, ready to use the elements to destroy the world.
