When John Steed's fiance, Laura Cartwright, is gunned down in front of him in the street by an unknown assailant, whose real target was Steed, the secret agent's world falls apart. A few months later, several operatives have disappeared without a trace, and Steed's superiors want him to investigate, but he is still in the process of grieving for Laura. His close friend, and one-time girlfriend, Emma Peel decides to team up with him, in order to get his life back on track and become the top agent in his profession once more.
