Bella Swan and Edward Cullen have been dating for a year now. But because of Edward's vampiric nature, he will continue to stay young forever while Bella will age as normal mortals do. Nevertheless, she is dismayed and flattered that the Cullens have thrown her a birthday party. But everything goes wrong when Bella accidently cuts her finger, sending Edward's brother Jasper into a near frenzy. Worried for Bella's safety, Edward breaks up with her, convinced that she's better off not involving herself in vampire affairs. Bella is devastated, but soon finds comfort with Jacob Black and the Quileute tribe. But when Bella finds herself entangled with a new coven of vampires who know that Bella is aware of their existense, she realizes the need to see the consequences of immortality... and her alliance to the supernatural.
